The Starry Eyed
Dolls
Earlier
work as a portrait artist is reflected in Rosemary's three dimensional work
as a doll artist. For most of her doll-making years, she has concentrated
on designing one-of-a-kind dolls. She starts with the preliminary sketches,
sculpts the piece in clay, and makes a plaster mold to reproduce the perfected
doll. Costume design and sewing, assembling the doll, and adding the finishing
details complete the project.
Much time is taken in china painting the finished pieces. They must be fired
several times before completion. Rosemary's trademark is highlighting the
painted eyes with little stars.
The eighteen inch doll is completely porcelain and fully jointed in a most
unique way. Her arms move not at the shoulder, but midway down the top of
the arm to allow for a flawless shoulder line. She can be seated by rotating
her legs. The head may be positioned up, down and around to give her an endearing
animated look. All in all, these artistic dolls are elegantly reminscent of
the well-loved fashion dolls of the fifties.
